Dear reader,
We love how this heater demonstrates what’s possible when a flexible design system is brought to life by creative minds and skillful hands. Tom and Claire requested a masonry heater design that included a baking oven, heated benches, and the possibility to heat hot water. We supplied them with the technical design and all of the specialty parts they needed. We were impressed to see the creativity that they applied to the facing which exemplifies what is possible with a custom masonry heater.

"We are sooooooo happy with our stove, the way it regulates the temperature in the room all night and even the next day." -Claire
Here is a view of the technical core design we provided. It includes two parallel 20' long heat exchange channels that allows their work of art to capture the heat generated by the fire and be an efficient thermal battery which heats their home.
We are getting very close to launching our kit and design system. We know that masonry heaters take a while to plan and then execute so reach out if you are ready to integrate our core components system into your next project. You can respond by email or call us at (541) 632-3028 to discuss your project further. We also would like to begin establishing professional builder accounts so reach out to learn more about this program.

Additional New Products:

In our efforts to truly address the needs of heater builders in one catalog, we continue to add products such as....

8" Anchor Plate with Damper

This 8" Chimney Anchor Plate with Damper provides a solution to transition from the refractory masonry core of a masonry heater core to a manufactured chimney system. This anchor plate is unique on the market because it incorporates a 90%+ built-in damper paddle which allows you not only to transition to the chimney but also provides a way to effectively shut-off flow in your system and prevent convective bleeds from inside the masonry heater to the exterior through the chimney.

8mmx1.25 Threaded Rod (50 cm)

This stainless steel 8mm threaded rod allows you to adjust the length of  the shaft  of industry-standard dampers without any complex machining. You simply cut the threaded rod to the length you need it, including the threaded portions that enter the damper blade and the handle.

Reflections

Although summer can sometimes feel like a slow time for masonry heater builders since many new construction and remodel projects are underway but not yet ready for heater construction, I have been thinking about how it is also the time that the thermal batteries we rely on are charging in the form of maximum growth in trees. It never ceases to amaze how ultimately we are involved in a solar energy technology whereby the energy provided by the sun is stored through the restorative process of photosynthesis in the organic chemistry of wood and firewood. Our task is to unlock that energy with minimal pollution, maximized heat exchange, humility, and gratitude.

This last decade has shown a continuing increasing focus by humanity on electricity for energy. I have been thinking about how electricity is often confused as an energy source in its own right. In fact, it is only a form of energy transmission that originates from solar, wind, hydro, biomass, fossil fuel, and nuclear energy production. With significantly increasing demands on the electrical grid by the transportation and computing sectors, we continue to see the efficient residential heating with biomass as part of an overall hybrid strategy towards meeting our society's energy needs.

The hybrid approach implies a recognition of complexity and maximizing the benefits of different components in a system. This approach also informs the design work we are currently engaged in to come up with a system of core components that are part of a modular system that allow standard parts to provide maximal design flexibility. We feel that making the whole process of masonry heater building easier - from concept through design to construction (and use!) - is an important step to making them more accessible. Thank you for being on this journey with us and we look forward to providing more updates to come!
